Career Development Specialist Position Description

To help ICS in the development of our new program, Tailored Day Service (TDS), which is specifically created to help individuals with developmental disabilities develop job related skills.

The specialist will develop and provide assessments, write curriculum, and provide ongoing training and support to individuals with developmental disabilities. Much of the work will be focused on creating individualized programs to develop soft skills (such as social skills needed for the workplace) and specific job related skills (e.g. cash register training). The specialist will also be responsible for finding educational opportunities and developing volunteer opportunities where individuals can grow their skills.

The specialist will write and develop not only individualized curriculum, but also help develop the overall curriculum for the program. This means developing an overarching social skills curriculum for the workplace, a point of sale training curriculum, etc.

The specialist will also implement these plans by providing one on one training with clients. This position is excellent preparation for moving into a director level position. Generally speaking, the specialist remains responsible for the development and implementation of program curriculum and services to individuals in Golden Gate Regional Center’s TDS Program.

As this is a new program, the specialist will be asked to split time working in ICS’s living skills program and in ICS’s job training program as the TDS program increases in size.

The basic day of work is eight hours, exclusive of the meal period. Staffing needs may require a variation in an employee's starting and quitting times and total hours worked each day of each week. Employees may be required to work overtime or hours other than those normally scheduled whenever necessary. (non-exempt). Salary range: $23-25/hr DOE.


  • Assess new client's independent living skills/work skills and work together with client and ILS Director, Employment Director (or other supervisor) to set an action plan
  • Interface with the community to develop volunteer sites that match clients employment needs
  • Research educational opportunities that would match clients employment related needs
  • Train clients 1:1 around their goals, including:
    • Soft skills training
    • Work skills training
    • Social skills training
    • Transportation training
    • Training related to volunteer opportunities
    • Training in education related opportunities
    • Domestic skills training
    • Community / communication skills training
    • Financial skills training
    • Personal health and hygiene skills training
  • Keep detailed progress notes after each session and update the client's file on the computer
  • Complete and submit all forms on time, including monthly and annual reports
  • Attend case conferences with clients, families and other agencies they work with
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss current cases and brainstorm creative solutions to challenges
  • Meet and keep up steady communication with the ILS Director, Employment Director, and other members of the team (including social workers, family, and others) on each assigned case
  • Provide short term support filling in when other ILS Trainers are not available.
  • Attend Case Conferences and meetings with other agencies involved with the consumer
  • Provide positive role model for ICS consumers


  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least two years experience working with persons with disabilities, preferably in a residential setting and/or teaching.
  • Experience may be substituted for education on a case by case basis.
  • Candidates must possess excellent verbal and written skills, be resourceful, adaptable and able to work within deadlines.
  • Valid California Driver's license with proof of insurance required. Background check; CPR and First Aid Certified.
