Behavioral Health SPECIALIST Position Details

POSITION DETAILS 

The Behavioral Health Specialist will work with individuals who have behavioral health diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar, schizo-affective disorder, depression, PTSD, and/or axis II. These individuals may also have co-occurring diagnoses such as an intellectual disability, substance use and/or physical disabilities, and may have experienced homelessness or justice system involvement. 

This is a full-time, 35–40 hour per week position, $24-$27/hour DOE.

    • Bereavement and reproductive loss leave: up to 5 days for each; 3 are paid

​DUTIES

Direct Client Work

In this role the Behavioral Health Specialist will provide living skills training, counseling, and support in the following areas: 

  • Household maintenance such as cleaning, laundry 

  • Self-care/health such as grooming/hygiene, diet, nutrition 

  • Budgeting and money management skills 

  • Developing healthy social connections and relationships 

  • Substance recovery support 

  • Community integration, school/educational planning, and volunteer work

Therapeutic and Work-Training Garden

In this role, you may also be providing clients’ support in GEM, ICS' therapeutic and work-training garden: 

  • Coach and support adults with disabilities in gardening and workplace-related skills

  • Plan and assist with planting, cultivating, and harvesting vegetables and flowers 

  • Model and reinforce appropriate behavior, communication, and teamwork 

  • Provide feedback and encouragement in a respectful, supportive way 

  • Maintain accurate documentation and reports on participant progress

  • Work closely with staff to create a positive, inclusive environment 

SmartCare/Medi-Cal Billing

In this role, you will be provided with training to learn SmartCare, the electronic health records (EHR) system used for Medi-Cal documentation and service tracking. 

  • Develop proficiency in writing professional, Medi-Cal-compliant progress notes, ensuring all documentation meets clinical and billing standards set by Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. 

  • Accurately and consistently enter service notes and related documentation into the SmartCare electronic health portal. 

  • Collaborate with clinical supervisors and administrative staff to maintain compliance with data entry, billing, and confidentiality protocols as outlined by Medi-Cal and county standards. 

Skill Set Desired 

Ability to work with complex mental health diagnoses using motivational counseling techniques and problem-solving 

  • Proven and consistent record of meeting deadlines for reports and progress notes

  • Knowledge of community resources 

  • Use of good judgment, responsiveness to ever-changing needs and concerns

  • Spanish language fluency is a plus 

  • Experience with Medi-Cal billing, SmartCare and/or Peer Certified is a plus

​Q​UALIFICATIONS

  •  Experience or advanced education working with complex behavioral health diagnoses. Experience includes casework or other work such as individual counseling, benefits counseling or medical coordination, justice system, substance use, community outreach, and lived experience 

  • Enjoy working in partnership with others: clients, multi-disciplinary partners (psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, probation, community partners, etc.) 

  • Digital literacy skills: Gmail, Google Suite, Zoom, MS Office, creating PDFs, Google Docs, Google Drive

  • Excellent verbal and written skills 

  • Valid identification, such as Real ID, driver’s license, or passport, required. A background check will be conducted.
